On behalf of the Skate Canada BC/YT Board of Directors, I am announcing that Ted Barton will be retiring as Executive Director.

Over the course of his 42-year career with Skate Canada British Columbia/Yukon, Ted has been instrumental in the advancement of the sport within our Section, nationally, and internationally. Ted’s innovative, people centered approach will certainly leave a legacy.

During his time as Executive Director, Ted was involved in delivering countless national and international events in BC. They included the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, 2001 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, 2009 ISU Four Continents Championships, 1997, 2008, and 2018 Canadian National Figure Skating Championships, and numerous Skate Canada International competitions. Hosting these successful competitions solidified Skate Canada BC/YT’s reputation of delivering high quality events.

In the early 2000s, Ted was one of six figure skating leaders who worked on the development of the new ISU Judging System (IJS) which Skate Canada quickly adopted for domestic events as the Cumulative Points Calculation System (CPC). This helped to modernize the sport and regain public confidence in the scoring of figure skating.

Ted is passionate about bringing figure skating to a variety of audiences. He played a significant role in delivering live streaming to Skate Canada BC/YT competitions, the ISU Junior Grand Prix, and Skate Canada events.

For his numerous contributions to the sport of figure skating, Ted was inducted into the BC Sport Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Burnaby Sport Hall of Fame in 2011 as a builder.

We will honour Ted’s career, and our entire skating community, at a retirement celebration on May 2nd. This will take place in conjunction with the Skate Canada BC/YT AGM. Please plan on joining us during the AGM weekend to celebrate Ted’s accomplishments.

Ted’s last day as Executive Director will be May 16th. The Board has begun the process of recruiting a new Executive Director.

Please join me in congratulating Ted on a successful career!

In skating,

Braden Davie

Chair, Skate Canada British Columbia Yukon
